FINMA approved Switzerland’s first retail fund that invests directly in Bitcoin. Its October 20 announcement identifies the product as a single-asset Bitcoin ETF.
Follow-up reporting on October 23 identified BIT Asset Management’s Bitcoin Fund ETF, ticker BBIT, with trading on SIX Swiss Exchange targeted for November. Approval and the first trading day remain separate milestones.

The scope of Switzerland’s “first”
The approval is not a claim that the world has never had a Bitcoin investment product. Its scope is a Swiss retail fund investing directly in Bitcoin. Understanding which jurisdiction, investor group and legal structure changed is necessary to interpret the word “first.”
Brokerage access to Bitcoin prices can feel similar across products even when the legal claims differ. Holding a fund interest is different from holding an issuer’s debt security. The words Bitcoin and exchange-traded do not make another product’s charges or insolvency arrangements applicable to this one.
The useful comparison is therefore a side-by-side reading of offering documents: investment assets, custodian, redemption arrangements, costs and distribution restrictions. Leave a condition unconfirmed when the final document is unavailable, rather than filling the gap with the terms of an older product.
How the structure differs
Products tracking Bitcoin do not necessarily share the same legal form. A debt-based exchange-traded product and a collective investment scheme require different questions about asset separation and investor rights.
BBIT was described as a Swiss collective investment scheme, with its public offering restricted to Switzerland. An overseas exchange listing does not establish that every Korean brokerage account can access it.
Which protections address which risks?
For an illustration, assume a fund tracks Bitcoin perfectly with no costs. If Bitcoin moves from 100 to 80, the underlying asset value falls 20%. Strong custody procedures and supervision do not remove that market-price movement.
| Exposure | Material to examine |
|---|---|
| Bitcoin price changes | BTC prices and the fund’s net asset value |
| Trading costs | Management charges, commissions and bid–ask spread |
| Custody and operations | Custody arrangements and incident provisions |
| Access | Distribution restrictions and brokerage availability |
This is a document-reading framework, not a confirmed BBIT fee schedule. Currency also matters if the trading currency differs from the investor’s reporting currency. Comparisons across listings should align both the currency and the observation time before interpreting differences in displayed prices.
What approval does not change
FINMA explicitly said Bitcoin’s market risk remains very high even through an approved ETF. Rules governing custody and distribution should not be confused with protection from a decline in the underlying asset.
The next documents to check are the exchange’s listing notice, final fund materials and distribution restrictions. A targeted launch month should remain a target until trading actually begins.
Diversification also needs a defined scope. An exchange offering many securities does not mean each listed fund invests in many underlying assets. A single-Bitcoin fund can retain concentrated price exposure despite being held as a security.
For an investor using another reporting currency, returns multiply. If an asset gains 10% in its trading currency while that currency loses 5% against the investor’s reference currency, the pre-cost result is 1.10 × 0.95 − 1, or +4.5%. This illustrates currency effects; it does not establish BBIT’s trading currency or hedging terms.
Compare hedging arrangements, trading currency and the currency used to report asset value separately. A common BTC underlying does not make every investor’s realized return identical.
What can only be judged after trading starts
Before listing, the design can be assessed, but actual spreads and the consistency of trading volume cannot be observed. A single opening session would also be insufficient to establish durable liquidity. The relationship between market price and underlying asset value deserves attention over time.
For example, buying at 102 when the underlying value is 100 creates an approximately 1.96% decline if the market price later converges to 100 while asset value stays unchanged. This is an illustration of a premium, not an observed BBIT result. Assess the expanded regulatory access first, then evaluate the real trading conditions when they become available.
